| What's New in Zinc Nutrition? |
 |
Turkey is a particularly appropriate venue for a conference on zinc in crops because it was here, in the early 1990s, that around 50% of soils in the main wheat growing area were shown to be zinc deficient. Starting in 1991, Ismail Cakmak and colleagues from Cukorova University, research institutes in Eskisehr and Konya, and CIMMYTAnkara, demonstrated that the disappointing yields of new, high yielding wheat varieties over large areas of Central Anatolia were due to zinc deficiency. They showed that zinc applications markedly increased yields by and average of 58% and now more than 300,000 t of zinc-containing fertilisers are applied regularly...read more
